It's that too-knowing, in-on-the-joke nature that really has deflated the majority of horror films since then. Even stuff I enjoyed at the time that would have been considered exploitation fare, like DEEP BLUE SEA, doesn't really compare to the stuff coming out in the 70's and early 80's.

Or to sum it up another way, the SAW films and the like are our modern day exploitation films now and they can only look lame in comparison to the films you've been showcasing here the past few months.Troy Olsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14843741571724231174noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14575780.post-32267666851348155262011-01-18T22:22:36.415+00:002011-01-18T22:22:36.415+00:00Oh and Neil that card on the top made my day. It's as if Joe Dante expected to never be allowed to make a movie again so he put everything he loved about monster movies into one flick.

What bothered me about the new Piranha wasn't the luridness or the cheapness but the mean spiritedness of the whole endeavor. You can make a movie about Killer Fish, or you can make a sadistic grueling horror film. You can't do both in the same movie.

Aja's violence just had a very nasty edge to it. For every OTT shot of O'Connel getting his wang eaten, we had a shot like the scalping via motorboat which I found genuinely upsetting.

It was just kind of a mean little shit of a movie.Bryce Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17040954580033470664noreply@blogger.com
