Christina Ricci

Once again, I’ve failed to prepare a review …

Once again, sheer unmitigated laziness has played its part …

Once again, I’m using the fact that it’s an extremely photogenic celebrity’s birthday to bail myself out.

So happy 31st to Christina Ricci.

  1. Most interesting face in hollywood. Criminally underused.

  2. She used to be great - all but destroyed herself now in her unending quest to make herself look as uninteresting as any other Hollywood starlet.
    Happy birthday, though!

  3. Elizabeth Banks and Christina Ricci, man did I do something nice for you that I can't remember? If so way to go me.

  4. Geekinc13 - absolutely. I specifically went to photos where the emphasis was on her face rather than, ah, other attributes.

Matthew - Ricci kind of strikes me as "the actress Hollywood doesn't quite know what to do with", the way the British film industry never really utilised the potential of, say, Barbara Steele or Kathleen Byron.

Bryce - you're more than welcome, sir. To be honest, this kind of post allows me to maintain content on TAOTM, even if I've failed to complete a film review, got blotto down the pub, or been sidetracked by such distractions as the charms of Mrs F, other people's blogs or the new Iain M. Banks novel.

Having said all that, I notice that Alison Pill's birthday is in late November. Leave it with me.

  5. Even though it got slammed all over the place, I quite enjoyed her in SPEED RACER. If there was anyone who could embody an anime character in real life it would be her!

  8. J.D. - yeah, I see where you're coming from ...

Brent - I think a 'Sleepy Hollow' review is long past due on my blog. In fact, a Burton retrospective might be a nice little project for later in the year!

  9. Hey there! Just had to come back and add more on Ricci. I've just finished, and mean 'just finished' watching Monster, and Ricci is superb, probably better than in Sleepy Hollow.
Burton is one of my most favorite directors. His gothicness really hits the spot for me. And is there a director in the world who can get the eccentricity out of Johnny Depp like Burton!. Nobody does eccentric like Depp.
Look forward to what you write on tis fine film maker!

  10. Hi Brent, good call on 'Monster'. With all the kudos Charlize Theron got for her performance - not to mention the Oscar win - it's criminal that Christina Ricci seemed to get overlooked. She's utterly brilliant in the film.

I might do the Burton retrospective in April or May. I've got some annual leave booked at the end of April so that would be an ideal time to sit down and watch a whole bunch of Burton movies. It'd give me time to re-read the Faber 'Burton on Burton' paperback as well.

  11. I've been thinking a bit more of Monter and your comments on Ricci in this film as it highlighted something. Would Theron's performance have had the same impact without Ricci's? Probably not. Monster is a film with a limited cast. It really is the Theron/Ricci show.
Ricci is ,as you say criminally overlooked. I think it is so often the case that a supporting actor /actress enhances a leads performance. Ricci done this to perfection in Monster, and it is somewhat erking that a performances like hers is forgotten. I think it is fair to say Theron got the kudos and Oscar but Ricci had a big part to play in that.
